DMX Vs DMX512...

Members of ESTA's Control Protocols Working Group will generally complain if you don't refer to the industry standard lighting control protocol as  "DMX512" and not simply as "DMX."  You might wonder why...

They will point out that "DMX" is the name of a rap artist. The Data Management, Exploration and Mining Group on the Microsoft website calls itself "DMX." They've seen some dark glasses with the brand name "DMX." "DMX" is ubiquitous, but there is only one "DMX512."

To help you remember, ESTA's Technical Standards Manager, Karl Ruling has penned this rap:

DMX Five Twelve is the name
Anything shorter just ain't the game.
Five-hundred twelve is how many bytes
That after the START Code lights your lights.

"DMX" is just a rapper,
A Microsoft group, a sunray zapper.
Add "five twelve" to get it right.
Go cue one! You'll see the light!
