Ultimate Converter: AVAB Dimmer Legend

There is a design error in the newer DD-IIB dimmers which requires that the data pair be swapped, that is, D- on pin 8 and D+ on pin 9. If the protocol converter doesn't have a console present output, the function may be disabled at the dimmer by turning on DIP switch B8.

The correct polarity of the inputs to the dimmer is normally:

  •         Pin 8: Data -
  •         Pin 9: Data +

The correct pin out of an adapter cable between the Ultimate converter using the information above is:

  •     ULTIMATE        AVAB DIMMER
  •     Pin 1: Ground        Pin 7: Signal Ground
  •     Pin 2: Data -        Pin 8: Data -
  •     Pin 3: Data +        Pin 9: Data +
  •     Pin 4: OC Drive        Pin 12: Console Present

This applies to Avab dimmers that receive AVAB as well as DMX data.

Additionally , there are still many AVAB 202 series consoles in use. These desks use an 8-pin DIN connector for data output.
The pinout for the AVAB 202 series is as follows:

  •     Pin 1: Data-
  •     Pin 2: Common
  •     Pin 3: Console Present
  •     Pin 4: Data+
  •     There is auxiliary 15 volt DC power present on pins 6 & 8, so be careful that these wires don't get accidentally shorted to the data wires.
